White noise is brightest and provides the strongest high-frequency masking. Pink noise reduces energy as frequency rises, so it sounds softer and more balanced. Brown noise reduces it further and sounds deep. Choose white for sharper distractions, pink for a gentler broad background, and brown for low rumbles. None is proven best for sleep or focus.

Each noise color contains random energy across frequencies. The distinction is how that energy changes as frequency rises.
White noise has equal power in every one-hertz band. Higher octaves contain more one-hertz bands, so white noise carries substantial upper-frequency energy and sounds bright.
Pink noise follows an approximate 1/f relationship. Its power falls by 3 dB per octave, leaving roughly equal power in each octave. Brown noise follows an approximate 1/f² relationship and falls by 6 dB per octave.
These definitions describe spectra, not volume, quality, or health effects. Two generators can have the same nominal color and still differ in bandwidth, peaks, looping, and playback level.
White noise resembles radio static or rushing air. Its upper-frequency content can make consonants, keyboard clicks, and other sharp sounds less distinct.
Best first test for: nearby speech, intermittent office noise, or a room with many higher-pitched changes.
Main drawback: hiss can become tiring through headphones. If you notice the sound more as a session continues, lower it or switch to pink noise.

Do not use comfort as proof of a medical effect. A noise color can provide an optional background; it does not treat anxiety, tinnitus, insomnia, or another condition. Persistent symptoms deserve qualified care.
