White noise may help sleep by masking changes in the room. A steady background reduces the contrast of a car, door, voice, or pipe, making the event less distinct. Research on continuous white noise as a sleep aid is mixed and low quality, so it should not be described as a cure for insomnia or a reliable way to increase deep sleep.
White noise has equal power per hertz across its frequency range. It sounds like static or rushing air and contains substantial high-frequency energy.
Sleep does not switch hearing off. The brain continues to process sound, and a meaningful or sudden event can prompt a brief arousal. A stable background raises the room’s acoustic floor, reducing the difference between ordinary background and a short disturbance.
This is masking. It is the clearest reason white noise may help someone in an inconsistent environment. White noise does not remove the source, block vibration, or make a room private. It also cannot guarantee that a masked sound will not wake you.

A systematic review by Riedy and colleagues examined studies of continuous white noise and similar broadband noise. Outcomes included sleep onset, awakenings, sleep quality, and sleep duration. The authors rated the evidence very low quality because methods, sound exposure, and measurements varied. Results were inconsistent, and some studies suggested that continuous noise could disturb sleep.
That review does not prove white noise is ineffective. It shows that broad claims are not justified. Someone with intermittent traffic may benefit from masking even if a laboratory study finds no average improvement across a different group and room.
It also helps separate white noise from synchronized pink-noise research. Sleep labs have tested brief pink-noise pulses timed to slow-wave activity with EEG. Those experiments use a different spectrum, timing system, and protocol. They do not show that continuous white noise increases deep sleep.
White noise is most defensible when environmental changes are the problem: doors, plumbing, distant speech, vehicles, or a partner’s early routine. It may be less useful when the room is already stable and quiet.
A familiar background can reduce the contrast of unfamiliar HVAC and hallway noise. It will not correct circadian timing or replace darkness, schedule management, and adequate sleep opportunity.
White noise can feel crisp and complete. Others find the hiss irritating. Preference matters because an unpleasant sound can become its own source of arousal.
This requires extra caution. A 2014 study measured 14 infant sleep machines and found that all could exceed 50 dBA at 30 cm on maximum; three exceeded 85 dBA. The study tested device output, not whether sound machines improve infant sleep. Its practical lesson is to keep devices away from the child, use the lowest level, avoid maximum output, and have an adult control playback. A sleep sound is not a substitute for current safe-sleep guidance from a pediatric professional.
White noise offers the most upper-frequency energy and may cover sharp details well. Pink noise reduces energy as frequency rises, producing a softer background. Brown noise is deeper and may fit low traffic or mechanical hum.

Start barely audible and raise the sound only until the disturbance loses contrast. Phone slider percentages do not equal decibels. Recording level, device, speaker, distance, and room all affect output.
The World Health Organization advises adults using personal audio devices to stay below an average of 80 dB and shorten exposure as level rises. A sleep background should be far below a dominant or forceful level. Keep smoke alarms, doorbells, children, traffic, and other important signals audible.
Place a speaker between you and the recurring noise source when practical, rather than beside the pillow. Do not block ventilation or create cable hazards. Headphones are usually uncomfortable for overnight use and can deliver sound close to the ear.
A short loop, sudden reset, or advertisement defeats the goal of consistency. Use a stable recording or generator and disable unrelated notifications.
Use the same setup for several nights, then compare similar nights without added sound. Note remembered awakenings, morning comfort, and whether the hiss itself became noticeable. Do not treat a consumer tracker’s sleep-stage estimate as a clinical measurement.
White noise does not treat insomnia, sleep apnea, tinnitus, anxiety, or excessive daytime sleepiness. Seek qualified care when sleep problems persist or include loud snoring, gasping, breathing pauses, or impaired daytime function. Stop playback if it causes pain, ringing, muffled hearing, headache, or fatigue.

Continuous white noise has not been shown to reliably increase deep sleep. Research on broadband noise and sleep is mixed and low quality. Studies of timed pink-noise pulses use a different protocol.
It may be reasonable at a quiet level if it addresses a continuing noise problem and remains comfortable. Keep the source away from your head, preserve important alerts, and compare it with silence. Children require more conservative adult-supervised setups.
Any sound can pose a risk when it is loud or prolonged enough. Use the lowest effective level, monitor hearing symptoms, and avoid placing a loud source near the ear. Device percentages are not reliable loudness measurements.
