A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences combined 36 studies of natural sounds and health-related outcomes. Across the included studies, natural sounds were associated with lower stress and annoyance, better health measures, and more positive affect. Water sounds produced the largest average effect on health and positive affect; bird sounds produced the largest average effect on stress and annoyance.
That result is encouraging, but it is broad. The studies differed in population, setting, sound, duration, comparison condition, and outcome. Some used laboratory recordings, while others measured real soundscapes. The review supports a modest practical claim: replacing unpleasant noise with a natural sound can make an environment feel better and may help short-term recovery. It does not show that every rain track lowers cortisol or that recordings reproduce the full effect of spending time outdoors.
One controlled experiment by Alvarsson and colleagues exposed 40 adults to a stressful arithmetic task and then played natural sound, ordinary ambient noise, or road noise. Skin-conductance recovery was faster during the natural sound condition than during the loud road-noise condition. The study tested a specific short recovery period, not an all-day relaxation protocol.
The label “nature sounds” covers recordings with very different acoustic properties. Choose by the job the sound needs to do.
A river or stream has continuous detail without language or a fixed melody. It can cover small room sounds while remaining softer than white noise. The PNAS review found the strongest average health and positive-affect results for water sounds, though that category included several types of water and outcomes.

Rain spreads energy across a wide range of frequencies, so it can reduce the contrast of distant traffic, plumbing, or hallway noise. Gentle rain usually works better for sleep and verbal tasks than a storm with distinct thunderclaps.

Bird calls add more distinct events. Many people associate them with a pleasant outdoor setting, and the 2021 review found favorable stress and annoyance outcomes for bird sounds. Calls can also interrupt reading or wake a light sleeper, especially when the recording contains sharp or close birds.
Try it for: a break, morning routine, or visual work rather than demanding reading.
Waves offer slow movement, while wind ranges from a soft wash to abrupt gusts. Neither is inherently calming. A recording with crashing surf or strong wind may be more activating than a quiet river.

Use natural audio to change the room, not to force a particular state. A simple test works better than searching for a universal “calming frequency”:
If the sound keeps asking for attention, try a simpler recording or silence. Persistent or overwhelming stress deserves appropriate support; a soundscape is not a treatment for anxiety or another health condition.
The strongest reason to use rain or water at night is masking. A stable background can make a door, car, or pipe less distinct. Research on continuous broadband noise and sleep is mixed and generally low quality, so it is safer to say that sound may reduce environmental disruption than that it creates deeper sleep.
Choose rain, a quiet stream, or wind without obvious gusts. Keep playback low, place speakers away from the pillow, and make sure alarms and other important signals remain audible. If the room is already quiet, compare the track with silence; adding sound is not automatically better.
