Thunderstorm Sea
The site keeps thunder and ocean as separate files. This one arrives already balanced, and the balance is the point: thunder rolls inside the surf instead of jumping out of it, so you can turn it up without a rumble startling you. Dark, wide, and near-continuous, with no bright crack anywhere in it. Forty seconds to the loop.

Stack this under rain or a fire, keep the blend, and play it with your screen off. Slo, on iOS, Android and Mac.
A storm that never spikes
Mixing thunder over surf yourself means fighting the peaks: a rumble that sits well at low volume becomes a jolt when you raise it. This recording was balanced at source, so the loudest moments stay close to the average. It is steadier than every rain and fire file added here, beaten only by the Underwater recording. Thunder is present almost constantly; it just never comes forward.
The spectrum says the same thing. Most of the sound is low and middle with very little on top, which is roll and swell rather than crack and snap.
Wide, dark, steady enough to leave running
The storm occupies the space ahead and to the sides, wide but short of the extreme spread the tent and grass rain recordings reach. Because so much of it is low, it needs headphones or a speaker that reaches down. On a laptop you will hear surf and lose most of the thunder.
For anyone who finds recorded storms unsettling rather than cosy, the even level helps but does not change what it is. Light sleepers may still register it, so try it awake first. The separate Thunder and Ocean Waves pages let you set your own balance in the sound mixer if you would rather control the levels yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Is this just thunder and ocean layered together?
It is one recording of a storm over water, already balanced. The thunder sits inside the surf instead of spiking above it.
How often does thunder occur?
Close to continuously. It rolls through the surf roughly once a second rather than arriving as isolated strikes.
Will it wake a light sleeper?
Less readily than an isolated thunder recording, since nothing here jumps in level. It is still a storm. Test it awake before leaving it on overnight.
Why does it sound dull on a laptop?
Most of its energy sits below what a small speaker can reproduce. Headphones or a full-range speaker restore the thunder.
